American Bison & Tallgrass Prairie

Location: Neal Smith National Wildlife Refuge, Iowa

Taking these photos at the Neal Smith National Wildlife Refuge was all about patience. My goal was to capture the quiet, heavy presence of the American bison out on the open Midwestern plains. I gave the images a moody, earthy look to bring out the rough textures of the tallgrass and the wild nature of the animals. In a vast place like this, you have to let go of control. You just wait behind the camera for the perfect light to capture a moment that feels completely untouched by time.
